Ciarán Walsh was commissioned by the Institute of Technology Tralee, Ireland (ITT) to document the Arctic Expedition by final year students of the college. It is being produced by FÁS TV and Video Production, Monavalley, Tralee.
The expedition was based in Totovara, near Yllas and involved an arduous programme of cross country skiing and camping by degree candidates of the Health and Leisure Dept. (ITT). The expedition lasted 8 days and was led by Tomás Aylward (ITT), Donal O Dowd (Cappanalea Outdoor Education Centre) and Dr Michael Hall (ITT).
The film crew – Ciarán Walsh and international mountain guide Kieran Creevy – arrived in Finland on 24 February and departed on 6 March. Conditions were good, temperatures, rising from minus 14 c to minus 2 c on the last day; heavy overcast conditions yielding to bright sunshine. Almost 4 hours of footage was shot and this is currently being edited in FÁS TV and Video Production by Editor Shane Kiely. Production is managed by Paul Dolan and post by Brian Nolan. The documentary is due for release in April 2011.
Filming was done on a JVC GYHM 700E (XDCAM), a Go Pro and B roll on a Panasonic SDR SW20.
